BIGNIK valais pur

Our current project is called “BIGNIK valais pur”. The project is ambitious: To create a checkered cloth as large as 120 football pitches. This area consists of exactly as many elements as the population of Valais. Over the next three years, the Valais edition of BIGNIK by conceptual artists Frank and Patrik Riklin, who have been implementing the concept in Eastern Switzerland for some time, will be collecting and sewing together reddish and whitish cloths. The first collective cloth display will take place in Brig in the fall. The aim is to positively stimulate and involve the population at the same time.

The Valais edition of BIGNIK was initiated by valais4you, an initiative of various municipalities, companies and the canton of Valais, which aims to create the best possible conditions for skilled workers moving to the region. One focus of this offer is to support the integration of newcomers. With the BIGNIK Valais pur project, valais4you aims to create opportunities to actively promote coexistence and interaction between locals and newcomers.

Thanks to BIGNIK, a shared cultural experience is to be realized that supports the concerns of valais4you.

Following the principle of “hunting, sewing and laying out,” the cloths required for BIGNIK are first collected, then sewn together and finally laid out. In order to do justice to the message “Valais on a cloth”, activities will be initiated continuously over the next three years, which will contribute to the Valais-specific concerns of the newcomers on the one hand and support the BIGNIK vision of the oversized giant cloth on the other. One cloth per inhabitant – that's exactly 357,282 cloths. The project sponsors want their idea to gain a foothold beyond the language border in Lower Valais in the long term. Whether patterned, more beige or orange or Bordeaux: since April 2024, white and red scarves have been collected through scarf collections to achieve the vision. If you want to drop off the cloths yourself, you can find collection points at the following locations: WNF Naters or tourist offices in Brig, Visp, Leuk and Sierre. At the same time, sewing workshops will be held to shape the collected cloths. The aim is to hold the first large-scale exhibition in fall 2024. Information on upcoming events can be found in our event overview. Don't miss out!
